PSE Marking
The electrical appliances and materials that are manufactured, imported and marketed in Japan are subject to be filed and inspected according to The Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law, and conform to safety standards. The PSE mark affixed to the product means the products has met the given criteria. *
PSE: These are the initial letters of "Product, Safety, and Electrical & Materials". The products with this mark show that they have conformed to safety technical standards. There are 2 types of PSE marks. One is for specified electrical appliances and materials, which is a diamond shape. The other is for electrical appliances and materials other than specified ones, which is a round shape.
Specified Electrical Appliance and Material
The diamond-shaped PSE mark applies to 115 items (as of Dec. 21, 2007) that require special safety. Companies which manufacture or import the specified electrical appliance and material are subject to conformity testing conducted by a national authorized conformity assessment body, and the Statement of Conformity shall be issued and retained.
Electrical Appliance and Material other than Specified Ones
The round-shaped PSE mark applies to the 339 items (as of Nov. 20, 2008) of electrical appliances and materials other than specified ones. Companies which manufacture or import the electrical appliance and material other than specified ones are subject to a voluntary conformity assessment based on a technical standard, and the assessment record shall be retained.
Electrical Appliance and Material Not Applicable
These electrical appliances and materials do not apply to the PSE marking. Besides these, a battery-operated machine, DC power supply appliance, PC, printer, computer device, and embedded device do not apply to the PSE marking, either. We support a voluntary assessment, a test method, and handling of the PSE mark for used electrical appliances and materials.
Conformity assessment according to technical standards (Safety test, RFI test)
METI ordinance Article 1 or 2 can be chosen for conformity to a technical standard. Conformity assessment of completed appliance (except parts, materials) will be conducted based on METI ordinance Article 2 according to the international standards.
Representative Service for acquisition of PSE marking qualification of Specified Electrical Appliance and Material
